GET THAT REFERRAL! When the primary care physician (PCP) suggests a patient see a specialist or have tests performed, the patient is being referred. It is the PCP's responsibility to notify the medical plan. But, if you or a dependent require emergency care or wish to see a particular specialist, it is your responsibility to notify the PCP. Many medical plan claim problems happen when the PCP does not notify the plan because the members forget to tell them that a referral is needed. Remember to notify your PCP when you need a referral.
EMPLOYEE SCHOLAR PROGRAM DO YOU WANT TO GET an extra $5,250.00 tax-free from UTC/Carrier this year? Go to school. The UTC Employee Scholar Program (ESP) pays your college expenses with no upper limit on cost. And, the IRS allows the first $5,250.00 spent by an employer for the undergraduate college expenses of an employee to be tax-free.
AND SPEAKING OF THE ESP If you want to use this program be sure the school is REGIONALLY ACCREDITED. Regional accredidation is the only form of accredidation acceptable to the US Department of Education for college-level learning. Don't be misled by schools having state or trade accredidation.
UTC REPRESENTED EMPLOYEES SAVINGS PLAN It's that time of the year again. The next contract year begins November 4th and the contribution levels of the Savings Plan change. The amount that the company will match at 50% increases from $44 to $46 per week. The maximum amount of unmatched contributions increases from $66 to $70 per week, bringing the total allowable weekly contributions to $116.
For example, if you put in $20 per week, Carrier will add another $10. If you put in $50 per week, the company will add $23 (50% of the $46 maximum). If you currently contribute $46 or more per week, the company match will increase automatically.
The first paycheck that will show the change will be the check of November 14th. If you want to increase your contribution as soon as possible, you need the call the Savings Plan Service Center at 1-800-466-2900 between 8:30 AM on Monday, November 4th and 4:00PM on Friday, November 8th for the change to be effective in the November 14th paycheck. The system will not accept the change if you call before the above time. Changes after that week will take effect a week after the change is requested.
If you are not a member, this is a good time to join. Don't pass up Carrier's contribution.

And speaking of dentists, now is a good time to start any extensive dental work you have planned. We have a $1,500 per person annual allowance for Class II and III services. These are services such as bridgework, fillings, root canals and crowns. The allowance is for a calendar year, so if you have some of the work done in December and the rest in January, you can take maximum advantage of the allowance for two years. Discuss this with you dentist.
Reminder: Orthodontia (braces) has a $1500 per person LIFETIME allowance, separate from the above allowance.
